hi,
i have a macbook pro 2.4ghz 2 mb ram... runs great as long as airport is turned off. just got a new external drive whereas before i had my files on my computer. last night during a dj set, the hard drive overload indicator went on and the song completely stopped for 2 seconds. this happened twice, both when i was cueing the next track.
i have about 400 samples in the various channels- could that be a part of the prob? i have the external plugged into firewire 800. i havent read many good things about the esata expresscards so i am reluctant to switch to the esata connection. the fw 800 should be sufficient. my buffer is at 1024 samples. the dropouts i experienced before with the airport problem were just a small hiccup in the sound but this was a complete drop for 2 seconds. it sucked!
any help fixing this is appreciated! (:

Re: just started using externnal drive-dropouts
Sat, August 9, 2008 - 7:38 PMWhat kind of external drive are you using? Is it one optimized for audio? You may want to google search for an external FW drive with an Oxford 911 chipset. When you had the dropout, what was your CPU looking like? It probably has less to do with the amount of tracks you have total as opposed to how many tracks you have running at the same time (and their length...I've noticed that longer tracks tend to be a little more taxing on my CPU....not sure why), or how many plugs you are running. I never had complete dropout but I have had some weird stutter effects in the past while performing live (it never happened at home...WTF?) and yes it does suck.....my sympathies and good luck! You may want to look a little closer at a couple of the things I just described. Paying attention to them helped me. Thankfully, in my case, what I do is glitchy enough to where nobody really noticed when my issues happened.

Re: just started using externnal drive-dropouts
Sun, August 10, 2008 - 8:29 AMit is a lacie d2 quadra- a good drive but i cant find any innfo on the chipset it has.
i have no plugins running (havent learned that much yet though i should do that! today!)
the CPU went up but it always runs at 12-20% and i think it jumped up no higher than 40 but only for that instant.
i have all those tracks loaded into the project but i was only running one and trying to cue one.
thanks for the help!
