Hello,
I am trying to decide which of these programs to buy right now. I want to use them for remixing at home with vinyl. I want to be able to start and stop and tweak until I have the perfect hour long mix. I don't want to do the whole thing straight thru "live". Does anyone have any suggestions on which program would be best for this?
Thanx,Jesh

Re: Ableton Live vs Traktor?!@#$
Sat, June 17, 2006 - 3:53 PMI think both programs offer free downloadable demo versions, you may want to play with them a bit to get your own sense of how they operate.
Live can be used for both "performing" a mix as well as fine-tuning and tweaking (whether you're looking to work with a single song or a continuous mix). I don't know which program would be considered "best" but Live works really well for me, it's my tool of choice.

Sun, July 9, 2006 - 3:24 PMI have used both, and hands down would go for ableton over traktor. -

Thu, July 20, 2006 - 4:31 PMG0 for Live if you want to do any kind of remixing without having to be wasting tons of time while doing so.
Traktor makes better use of mp3's and traditional cdj-style mixing , but Live adds the extra creative edge thats hard to find in other software dj programs. -

Mon, August 14, 2006 - 2:44 PMThat's my boy! He just recently transitioned to Ableton so I have high hope for him. His mixing using CDJs was flawless.
My recent Ableton sets can be found here:

Tue, August 15, 2006 - 2:39 AMDunno about flawless ;)
I have Traktor and I tried to use it alongside the CDJs for a while,. Even though the interface is familiar it's just not super flexible. Ableton Live's got a bit of a hump and I'm still not a fan of the session view, however, for actually sitting down to produce a set it's the best thing I've ever used. I've been able to rattle out sets in hours replete with the sorts of loops and effects that I'd have to spend some time pre-programming on the CDJs. Really has made a big difference to the sorts of tunes I've been able to play, as well. Editing out those misplaced drops and vocal loops is fantastic. :)
I've been using it for two weeks, or so, and I've really enjoyed it. Definitely try it out. I've got another two sets I've done in it that I'll post up on Mixdepot later in the month.

Re: Ableton Live vs Traktor?!@#$
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 9:32 PMAbleton live all the way... for studio remixing. And for live mixing too.
Traktor is lighter on the CPU and has a more physical feel (that is if you use one of the interfaces designed for it). But Ableton Live is a DAW too, it has instruments and the warp markers are amazing... and Traktor isn't a DAW (the version I have, at least).

Sun, March 23, 2008 - 11:13 PMAloha, Jesh.
I used to use Traktor... I had to go through, re-mixing 'live', through an entire set... if I screwed up, I'd have to use a sound editor to try to fix it...
Traktor's just like a pair of CDJ's... that's all...
Ableton Live, on the other hand, allows exactly what you want... to stop and tweak until it's perfect... absolutely perfect.

Re: Ableton Live vs Traktor?!@#$
Fri, June 20, 2008 - 9:17 AMboth programs are excellent, but traktor has noticeably better time-stretching algorithms, which may matter to you if you're doing a studio mix. that being said, 'tweaking' the mix is really only going to be possible in ableton. with traktor, you can set fade-in/-out points such that some of the mix can be automated, but ultimately if you want control you're going to have to do it live, in which case you will be limited by your ability and won't have the opportunity to go back and edit.
