Pro Tools or Ableton...

Hey everyone-

I'm fairly new to using computer as opposed to hardware for music. I've been using Ableton and loving it! My partner-who's the lead on our current project is using Pro Tools and...it has been a GIGANTIC pain in the ass. Non stop problems with OSX (it is a new Intel laptop to be fair), plug ins, memory, etc. We are using some difficult plug ins (Arturia-the boards have non stop complaints about their wares) but its become a bit of a joke.

He's new to computers, period, so I suppect he's doing certain things wrong, but-literally, if we get more than five channels going without laying them down to elimate the plug in we get memory issues with play back. To me, I can't belive that PT chokes this much. I just want to go with Ableton-is there anything Pro Tools can do that Ableton can't do...?

ALLOT.. I use both myself.. Protools Mixing, mastering, advanced track routing, intricate automation capability, and much more. I can go on and on if needed.

    Example:
Try to EQ one side of a stereo signal in Live, side chain a compressor, Edit a waveform.

Ableton Live is what i use for creativity. It is much more music inspiring but a horrible mixing tool.

Your friends setup is fundamentally messed up. What hes experiencing is not the case with a properly setup system.

So ask yourself this. Do you need a less technical more creatively free app, or a more featured mixing/editing engine?

Thanks-I'm looking more for the creative side-I just gotta get thru to him because he thinks Pro Tools is the answer (and he won't read the manuals :-(( LOL!)

hey, i'm not so computer savvy myself, but i got protools 7.1.1 on an intel and it had the same problem. it choked all the time. i called digidesign and they said 7.1.1 wasn't guaranteed to work well on an intel, so they gave me 7.3 for free and i've been using it ever since and it cooks and works great. you might want to call them and see if they can help.

I have a ProTools TDM system at my studio but I only use it for tracking live instruments (drums, amps, etc) and pre-mixing (the summing bus sounds horrible).

As someone who used ProTools and SoundTools for 10+ years ...and used to work at Digidesign (I suggested the "Smart Tool" to the Project Manager back in the day), I think LIVE is 1,000 times better for writing, composing, editing and remixing.

Let's not even get into trying to get support from them.

Two hours of listening to new-age smoooooth jazz while on hold and finally gave up. If you put "bring the troops home now" vs. "banning smooth new-age jazz music-on-hold" to a vote, sorry, I would have to go with the latter.

At this point, if I were to re-purchase a DAW, I would go with Logic Pro and Apogee Hardware over an HD system.

Thanks everyone-I'll see if I can get him to try Ableton...mixing is a while away...

          Agreed,

If you're jamming together and composing(it sounds like a jam setup), then I'd go with Live, simply because ProTools is meant for final arrangement, mixing and most importantly mastering, which Ableton is terrible at. But, putting two people and their gear all in with extra chanels for one off samples, fx routing, it's defintely ableton all the way. Pro tool's sound quality is much better overall but you will learn to get good sound out of albeton after a while. The other cool thing you could do is slaving one instance of ableton to another instance on another computer...that way you both get your own space, but one locks the tempo for you.

          Rock!

Exactly Deeco! I personally use protools for premastering/mastering, recording instruments, and final arrangements. And I only use Ableton for my live sets and tempo corrections. Both are strong programs and have their benifits, but protools has a bit of a learning curve to get over, more so than Ableton imo ...

              Thanks all!

The big thing is that we're using a whole lot of soft synths and Pro Tools is dying like a pig. We even added 2 gigs of memory and the thing chokes every chance it gets. It's become unworkable. I'm completely convinced that Pro Tools is mixing and mastering software and Ableton is composition software, but I can't seem to get my dawg to think that way...

If you guys were willing to add $200ish for RAM., maybe it's worth installing ableton live lite 6 with your buddy's PT disks(maybe) or from numerous midi controllers you may have purchased recently or even the ableton site and upgrade for about the same price as the RAM.

                My 2 cents

LOL! Yeah...the issue is that my dawg is married to learning Pro Tools and he doesn't want to change wares. I honestly just wanted to make sure I had the right perspective-compose in Ableton, mix and master in Pro Tools. So far everyone has confirmed that. I'm pretty much going to set everything up on his Mac and let him bang his head against the wall until he makes a decision.

This is ridiculous, everyone knows that "Pro Tools" is useless compared to Ableton Live for professional audio production....

Pro-Tools is for low level producers without good ears....

Real sound designers/engineers who actually listen use Ableton! Everyone else is just babling...

I've *never* ever used ProTools, so I think I can expertly and emphatically state that Ableton is better than anything else, but only on the PC! Oh - and only firewire audio interfaces work, USB is crap. But you have to use USB for external drives - don't look for logic here kids, I use USB so you have to as well to be cool or I will pwn you on teh internets. Anything more than 25 keys on your keyboard and you're just showing off. Um... oh yeah! Only losers use headphones, reference monitors are the only way to go or your music will suck forEVER. I think that's the end of Rev. Zed's needing attention for the moment.

Kidding aside, I find eRic's advice to always be well thought out and insightful, not to mention Deeco's. Seems like *everyone* here is committed to helping fellow artists spend less time worrying about their gear and more time making great music. It's great to have a tribe like this where you get honest, frank, and fact-based answers to your questions. Keep up the good work, brothers & sisters!

Thanks i'm glad i'm helping someone.. I am very blunt and might seem like a d%$# sometimes but everything i will say like you said will be factual and honest.

As an audio engineer, I've worked plenty with Pro Tools. It is the industry standard in professional recording. That being said, it is being used as a DAW to record live instruments being piped in rather than for electronic music production. Ableton Live is great for sequencing samples and loops you already have created or want to modify. Aside from the use of midi-controllers, it's a rather DIY type of system. So to answer your question, here's my advice:

If all you're doing is recording in and editing, Pro Tools is efficient.
If you're trying to create sounds and sequence them, Ableton is a better program to use.
