Anyone have any free VST synth recommendations? I am looking for a basic waveform generator-type as well as one that will work with a MIDI keyboard controller. Thanks!

search the archives of this tribe, but a quick link: www.kvraudio.com you can search the site for plugins based on what you're looking for.
not quite sure what you mean by basic waveform generator as opposed to one that works with a midi-controller...

i personally use a lot of the computer music stuff (you have to buy the magazine, but they include a dvd with software and samples.) for BASS-ic stuff i use the cm303 (tb 303 emulator) a lot. i also like the minimogue (not computer music, but freeware) for fat analog sounds.

By basic waveform generator, I mean synths that don't require a physical controller - just knobs - pick a waveform, set an oscillator, tweak the ADSR settings and maybe throw some filtering at it. I think Live operator would do the trick, I just want a cheap or free one. Most such plug-ins are a bit too dazzling for me - I want a simple basic one with an intuitive layout. There are bunch of them out there:

...but I am looking for some reviews.

      Thanks for the info!
