UC-33 sketchiness?

topic posted Fri, April 29, 2005 - 9:34 PM by  The Phat Con...
anyone else have problems with theirs?

i am using ableton on a PC and sometimes when i am doing the live PA the uc-33 totally bails and i have to restart ableton.

might be hitting a key by accident on the uc-33 or something. but then none of the presets bring it back to where it was.

really don't care to repeat this on tour this summer. anyone have any suggestions?

... I have a similar prob. w/ my Novation Remote SL... if I change the template/preset, Live loses track of it... I have to do Live's preset dump in order to get it back...
maybe you're accidentally changing the preset/template...

Are both of you on PC? I've never had this issue on my Mac, but they are plug and play, so that might be why. I just got a UC-33 (for $7 BTW...wooohooo - gotta love geek garage sales) and have not had this issue. Please let me know if you can recreate it and I'll see if I can on my machine and we'll see if it's Windows based only or universal. I've been thrilled w/ mine for the last few days. I hope I don't start getting this problem. It's really a joy to use.

I used to have to deal with that a lot with an Akai MPD16, once it took my Trigger Finger with it.

One thing that sometimes seems to be at fault is the connection to the device isn't quite as secure as it seems. The cable feels tight, but it either moves or vibrates just enough to get too low a voltage or otherwise break the connection long enough for Ableton to no longer recognize it. A little gaffer's tape to secure it during a set could rule that out. Another weak point from a hardware perspective is the seam of the solder on the connection in the device cracking. Pressure one way or the other breaks the connection. Happens more often on encoders or faders though. That one can be ruled out right away buy applying a little pressure to the connection from every angle. The readout will go dead briefly.

I was thinking of replacing my MPD24 with that, I hope it's not a common problem.

Aside from reloading the firmware, if it has any, I can't offer anything else. Best of luck, Phat.

I just had that happen to me at a gig last friday. My uc33 Just suddenly stopped responding and I was not able to re assign anything in ableton's midi map mode. It didn't have anything to do with presets or anything. There was just no data being sent from the controlls at all.
Luckily I was running two seperate outputs into the house dj mixer so I was able to finnish the set only using that.
    Pretty weird though.
One thing that I didn't try in the heat of the moment was to switch the uc33 off and then back on again. But later I tried this as a test to see if ableton would loose midi connection upon uc33 power off and on and it worked. So it looks like it is safe to at least try turning it off and then back on while you're in the middle of your set.

Since my last post I had the uc-33 drop out at another gig (btw, for this show, gear used was Macbook pro, moyu ultralite, and uc-33)
I power cycled it and it picked connection right back up. Then about 15 minutes later my whole laptop froze up. Audio stopped, graphics froze, and no trackpad or key response. Had to hold down power and hard reboot.
SO Im not sure if the two things were related at all but Ive never had that happen before. And I can't remember if i had repaired permissions before the gig or not and that could always have something to do with it but pretty unlikely.

Last night at a gig I was using the akai mpd32 along with my x-session (and motu UL) and twice durring the set my akai lost midi control.
After searching some forums today I saw people having the same problem with the trigger finger on a mac and everyones solution was to get a Powered usb hub and plug into that.
I really dont want to have to add to my gigging setup but if it will potentially fix the problem then I guess I might have to.
