High Speed Router MIDI connection on PC?

I'm sure there's been a post about this is the past... I'm not seeing it, though.
I've heard something of using a 'crossover cable'... but have no experience... seeking guidance...
basically, would like to sync up a couple of laptops in a tag-team set, or a live collaboration.
