I am looking to move over to Ableton...Mac or PC?

I presently spin on Traktor, but would like to move over to Ableton sometime in the near-ish future...both for my live sets, and to begin my foray into the world of production. I presently do everything on my MacBook, but have been told by some that the PC is a better format for Ableton due to the larger number of compatible programs and VST's.

I love my Mac, but would consider a PC for my upcoming studio, if it is a better platform all around.

  • ...or solve the whole problem and get one of the new Macbook Pro that should run both Mac and PC wares...
    • Good point there.
      • Actually, I re-read your post and noticed that you are already with a Macbook Pro. For what it's worth, Ableton will work fine with your MacBook. No need to buy another computer. You may want to partition your hard drive and set it up with Win XP and run boot camp. Then again, try just running Ableton on OSX and see for yourself. There was an earlier argument that Ableton ran better on Windows but I also understand that the point has been rendered moot since the dual core Universal Binary Macs were developed. In the future you may still want to partition your hard drive as there are some really good windows apps like Sound Forge, Wave Lab, CD Architect, Vegas, etc. that may come in handy for you. I sure wouldn't dog Windows and you are set up for the best of both worlds with what you have.

As a windows and Os x user I will say that I personally think that Live runs WAY better and smoother on windows (granted you have a smoothly running Windows operating system, which is another story).
Even though Ableton touted since version 5 "now optimized for mac" there's no doubt about it. Live still runs a little bit clunkier on os x.
I have different Live projects going on under both operating systems and constantly bounce back and forth so I can really see/feel the differences between the way it behaves under both. The differences are pretty small but being a long time live user one should really be able to tell.
I recommend using ableton through bootcamp on your macbook with Winxp.
          • Turn off Airport and Ableton will run on OSX like a cheetah.
            • I have heard that before.....there was another post on the Reason Tribe where someone was playing out with their macbook pro and had some real problems until they turned off AirPort. The app was probably struggling to find a signal or was confused by multiple wireless nodes and was dragging on audio....and this was Reason he was using.

Although turning off Airport is a quintessential step to do while running a smooth audio system under os x, it also has nothing to do with the ableton quirks that I speak of. The same little quirks are apparent on my MBP and My Mac tower which doesn't even have an airport card installed. And to now that I think about it, there has been times where I have forgotten to turn airport off on my MBP and I never noticed any performance issue. But it IS safe to keep it off, ecspecialy if you're gigging.
But yea, I still enjoy the tightness of windows Ableton a lot more.
In fact, I'm even using a cracked version of Live (and all of the software that I legally own, so as not to waste multiple computer licenses) on my pc partition and it runs tighter than my fully legit install on my os x partition. It's just something about the way that Live was originally coded on the windows system.
But then again, Automat is awsome and is os x only.
