I'm fairly new to using computer as opposed to hardware for music. I've been using Ableton and loving it! My partner-who's the lead on our current project is using Pro Tools and...it has been a GIGANTIC pain in the ass. Non stop problems with OSX (it is a new Intel laptop to be fair), plug ins, memory, etc. We are using some difficult plug ins (Arturia-the boards have non stop complaints about their wares) but its become a bit of a joke.

He's new to computers, period, so I suppect he's doing certain things wrong, but-literally, if we get more than five channels going without laying them down to elimate the plug in we get memory issues with play back. To me, I can't belive that PT chokes this much. I just want to go with Ableton-is there anything Pro Tools can do that Ableton can't do...?

My problem is that when I try to assign functions under the Midi-Mappings setting Live only reads the information as a "pitchbend" (under the "Note/Control" listing).

The best of it's kind and perfect for mapping Live on to.

I bought this last year and used it only ONCE. It's in brand new mint condition and even comes with a brand new RoughCase carrying case!

Feel free to contact me with any questions, but here are the basics:

The ZERO LIVE CONTROL MIXER is an all-in-one "core station" designed for live performance artists, remix producers, and serious computer musicians providing a digital mixer, audio I/O, MIDI controller, and effect processor all in a single unit. Each channel can be switched between sources such as a turntable, CD player, microphone, computer, instrument, MIDI controller, or MIDI controller + audio to implement a sophisticated live mixing setup with the simplicity of a FireWire connection. This gives you an incredibly powerful and flexible tool designed specifically for live performance and remix production.

DESIGNED FOR HIGH-QUALITY DIGITAL AND ANALOG AUDIO
ZERO LIVE CONTROL MIXER delivers truly professional-spec audio. It supports 24-bit 48 kHz high-resolution audio as standard, and can support up to 24-bit 192 kHz audio that’s equivalent to DVD audio fidelity. Along with the digital domain, analog components such as the input/output circuitry and power supply have been designed with painstaking attention to high-quality sound. The internal ±18 volt power supply design delivers plenty of headroom and excellent audio quality. The mic preamps are an ultra-low impedance design by Peter Watts, a veteran designer of numerous professional mixers throughout his tenure at the Trident Corporation in the UK and as chief designer and vice president for product development at Mackie Designs in the USA. Finally, the power supply is a universal design that does not require an AC adapter, ensuring that the world-traveling professional can get to work immediately, assured of the highest level of performance.

EQ VARIETY
The EQ Selector is a completely new idea, providing an EQ section with eleven different simulation types. They cover needs ranging from corrective equalization to boldly creative sound-shaping, giving you a variety of EQ responses and curves, filter characteristics, and even isolator modeling that can be switched independently for each channel as needed. The stereo four-channel ZERO4 provides one unit that is shared by all channels.

A FULL COMPLEMENT OF EFFECTS
One particular advantage of the ZERO series is its powerful effect system. On the stereo four-channel ZERO4, there are Insert effects for independent use on each channel, plus a Master effect connected to sampler/effect buss.

FIREWIRE CONTROL OVER AUDIO AND MIDI
ZERO LIVE CONTROL MIXER contains a FireWire interface that lets you process and mix audio sources digitally, at the same time as performing MIDI control. Since ZERO LIVE CONTROL MIXER contains everything else you need (audio interface, mixer, effect processor, MIDI controller), setup is simple, making it an extremely convenient choice for the mobile computer-based professional.

The ZERO4 also contains a loop sampler that can synchronize to the BPM. This makes it easy to sample or play back loops (or one-shot samples) in perfect time with the current tempo, giving you the flexibility for complex mixes or dub mixing.

A COMPLETE MIDI CONTROL SURFACE
By using the dedicated "ZERO Edit" software you can freely assign MIDI messages to the faders, knobs, buttons, and toggle switches. This allows you to use the abundant hardware on the ZERO Mixers to control soft synths, DAWs, effects processors and much more. Since each channel of the mixer can be assigned to different functions you can be mixing the audio from your computer with one channel while adjusting MIDI parameters with another.

PROFESSIONAL-LEVEL HARDWARE DESIGN
The crossfader of the stereo four-channel ZERO4 uses a two-rail design for excellent durability. The compact chassis is made of aluminum alloy and steel for portability and durability. The periphery of the control knobs is illuminated in two colors depicting audio mode and MIDI mode, ensuring accurate control on stage or in dim lighting.

Total deal for someone looking for a quality product!

Ableton + Novation Remote SL deep problem

Hey guys,

I am dealing with a deep issue and need some help from a guru. Understanding this problem will require experience using a Novation Remote SL in tandem with Ableton Live.

My rig consists very simply of a Macbook 2 GHz Intel Core Duo running OS 10.4.11 with Live 6.0.1. It is connected via USB to a Novation Remote SL 25.

What I am attempting to do is this: I have a Live session with ten audio regions on one track in arrangement view (I am working only within arrangement view). I have placed a locator at the beginning of each region. My task is to assign each locator to a different button on my Remote SL. Very simple indeed.

On the Live side of this task, all this requires is entering MIDI map mode, and mapping the locators to the buttons on my Remote SL. This was easily accomplished.

On the Remote side, it is a bit more tedious. I have to create a new template in their template editor. My starting point for this process was a template that Novation provides, called 'MIDI CC Learn.syx', which is a template specifically for editing yourself.

All I really had to do was dictate what kind of MIDI messages those buttons would send. I decided to make them CC messages, with a default value of 0, a release/max value of 0, and a Press/min value of 127. I then designated the 'button type' as 'Momentary'.

So once I had done this, it was working pretty well: I press the button, and the cursor moves to the corresponding locator. And on the LCD display of my Novation, when I press the button, the value changes from 127 while I'm pressing the button, and goes back to 0 when I take my finger off it.

But there was an unexpected problem. For two of the buttons, when I pushed them the cursor would move to their locator, but then I could not execute any commands (such as 'play', or moving to another locator) for about 5 seconds. In other words, the cursor would be 'frozen' as that locator for about 5 seconds.

I noticed that on the LCD, when I would press either of these two problematic buttons, the CC value would stay at 127 for about 5 seconds, even after I took my finger off the button. Clearly, that was why the cursor was still locked at that locator after I took my finger off the button.

So it was time to troubleshoot. First, I double-checked that the template settings were the same for those two buttons as they were on other buttons. Indeed they were. Second, I considered that perhaps the buttons themselves were defective and getting 'stuck' in the pressed position. I tested this by assigning those locators to different buttons on my Remote SL. To my great surprise, the problem persisted.

So I figured there must be something in my Live session causing this to happen. I thus proceeded to change things in my Live session to see if I could figure out the problem. Here are the various things I tried:

1. I quit Live, turned off my Remote SL, shut down my computer, and then restarted everything. The problem persisted.

2. I deleted all the locators and the re-created them. The problem persisted.

3. I deleted all locators, then copy/pasted the two problematic audio regions to the end of my session, and deleted the originals in the middle of the session, where they were previously. I then created new locators. I found that the new copy/pasted duplicates of those original audio regions worked fine but, to my shock, now two other audio regions (and their locators) were behaving in the same problematic way!

4. I created a completely new Live session. I imported into it 10 random mp3s and arranged them as audio regions spaced across one track. I then assigned each a locator, and assigned them to buttons on my Remote SL. To my complete shock, I had the same problem!!! Two of the audio regions behaved in the same, problematic way!! Just for the heck of it, I once again reassigned the locators to different buttons on my Remote SL. Of course, just like before, it made no difference. The same two audio regions still behaved problematically.

Now I'm at a complete loss. Any help would be appreciated.

* Option-Cmd-B (PC: Ctrl-Alt-B): Open/close browser (and arrow keys scroll).
* Shift-TAB (PC: TAB alone): Switches between Arrange View and Session View (the linear track view and live performance-oriented clip view, respectively).
* Shift-SPACE: Starts/stops playback at the current playhead position; i.e., it’s a pause function. (SPACE alone starts at the beginning of the song.)
* Cmd-1,2,3,4 (PC: Ctrl-1,2,3,4): Adjusts the active quantization grid in current clips while editing. This one is really essential, of course.
* Cmd-arrow keys (PC: Ctrl-1,2,3,4): Controls Loop Region length. This really speeds up editing in a big way. Up/down uses a large increment (doubling/halving), whereas the right and left arrow keys use a small increment.
* Cmd-D (PC: Ctrl-D): Duplicate (and it duplicates everything, so it’s handy in Session View)
* Cmd-I (PC: Ctrl-I): Insert silence
* Cmd-B (PC: Ctrl-B): Draw Mode – essential for being able to switch between drawing and selection in clip piano roll, envelopes, etc.
* Shift-Cmd-I (PC: Ctrl-Cmd-I): Capture and Insert Scene. This cleans up your set by taking combinations and automatically inserting them in scenes.

http://www.theoppositeoffaith.com/Press_release_DSI_001_01_full.htm

This is likely the last AMV video project Opposite of Faith will do. It is meant to be a demo of the advanced MIDI set up and creative application of the tools we are capable of. We remixed the song ‘Phaseshift’ and created the sound track to it. It feature the combination of the Legendary DJ Quest-one of the founders of modern turntablism, inventor of ‘Hamster Style’ and ‘Power Scratching’

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DJ_Quest

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyaSiUSR8j4

Once again this is a scratch soundtrack-all sound effects were created through DJ performance and/or sound design. Video cuts were done with Serato and any edits or warping were done in Ableton Live and After Effects.

The Dave Smith Instruments Evolver is the master sequencer and controller in this set up. You can see how it works especially during the end solo. Its sequencer sends out MIDI notes to control both Turntables-which are slaved via MIDI-changing their pitch which alters the speed of the turntable platter, This process alters the sound of what ever the turntables are playing and creating a melody matching the Evolvers sequence. The audio signal is also processed on a separate chanels which is brought in through the effects loop. The Ecler Nuo 4 and the Behringer FCB 1010 control parameter (MIDI Control Changes) to give Quest additional control options.

DJ Quest Set up 1:

Numark CDX CD Turntable
Ableton Live
TTM 57 Mixer

Various samples and sounds that need to be cut in a particular way were burned to CD and the Numark CD was used

Dave Smith Instrument Evoler
Vestax Controller One Turntable
Ecler Nuo 4 MIDI Mixer
Behringer FCB 1010

The Koass Pad was used as a MIDI controller and the Evolver was used as a MIDI slave and sound processor
Born in Canada, Owen moved first to San Fransisco where he DJ'd and began composing music, and then later to Nashville where he began to produce. In 2005, Owen moved to Los Angeles to attend Cal-Art's music tech program for his BFA.

During his last year at Cal-Arts Owen worked both on the construction of a multi-touch table and was part of the group who ported the monome to the arduino platform. He is currently working towards a PhD in multi-media engineering, teaching at CalArts, and recently became the director of technology and special projects for Slogan Music in Hollywood.
Owen has always been fascinated with the intersection of technology and art, feeling that the meeting of the two can bring about new areas of artistic creativity.
i have about 400 samples in the various channels- could that be a part of the prob? i have the external plugged into firewire 800. i havent read many good things about the esata expresscards so i am reluctant to switch to the esata connection. the fw 800 should be sufficient. my buffer is at 1024 samples. the dropouts i experienced before with the airport problem were just a small hiccup in the sound but this was a complete drop for 2 seconds. it sucked!
While I mix it, I try to keep the volume at the same level and I do a fairly good job, as well as the EQ mixing.

But when I render the mix something goes wrong. At one time, a whole song was played with no "bass" at all, then I opened the set again, went into Arrangement view and reviewd the EQ mixing, which was ok, and rendered again. But in the second time, something else got f*ckd up, which was the last song, in which the volume was VERY below the one that I played the set.

Any hints?

Well I finaly decided to go with the Novation Remote 25SL as my midi controller for Live. I chose it because it seemed functional for both creating new music and DJ applications. I got the latest Auto Map files from the Novation site and it is working very well so far. I had to re-map the deault midi notes for the drum pads on the SL so that they would trigger the Impulse pads, and now those are working great, but...

I can't figure out how to use the actual keys of the SL's keyboard to play Lives virtual instruments. So far I can can use Impulse and they 8 associated pads, but I want to play the actual keyboard like a synthesizer. What am I missing?

cheers,

This can be used for frequency dependent FX & mastering purposes. This uses subtractive phase techniques as opposed to minimal phase EQ. In other words the basic signal flow design framework wont change or color your audio. You can test this by double bussing & inverting the phase.
What you are about to see is an evolution in film sound design far different from anything you‘ve heard before…
The Karas AMV

Anime Music Videos (AMV) are created by hobbyist who take a popular song and add it on top of existing Japanese Animation footage to give the Video a new and more exciting feel. The Karas AMV was created around the idea of taking found sources and samples from existing Japanese Animation titles and combining it with performances highly skilled musicians and Turntablist to recreate the film sound effect work creating a frenetic, hyper real approach to sound design. After the original sound track was removed, the music (Bass performance and Ableton sounds by J of The Opposite of Faith) was written and recorded into Ableton Live- every other voice, movement, moment and mood was created on Turntables and through Turntable mixing techniques (cutting, scratching, transforming) while performing to the video. The approach was expanded by having the Turntablist (DJ Quest and DJ Cplus) manipulating the Dave Smith Evolver and the Korg Kaoss Pad through the DJ mixers and MIDI control. Performances (Bass, Turntables) were record through the EMU 1616 into Ableton Live and warped, edited and combined there. The final mixdown was performed in Ableton Live and Mastered using Summit Audio Tube EQs.

First off -- Thanks to everyone who has been answering my questions this past week. It's been immensely helpful.

I am now bedroom DJ-ing successfully with Ableton Live 6 on a Windows XP laptop with an M-Audio Fast Track Pro (audio interface) and an M-Audio X-Session Pro (MIDI controller).

I will start using this setup for two live DJ gigs next week.

I still have a few more (somewhat less urgent) questions. I have a feeling that the answer to most of these is "Sorry, Live doesn't do that," but I'll ask anyway. If the answer to any of these is "Live 6 doesn't do that but Live 7 does", that would be good to know too.

1) For a clip on an audio track, I can adjust the clip's volume on Master Out. Is there a way to also adjust the clip's volume on Cue (when it's not playing on Master Out)?

2) If a clip on an audio track is playing to Master Out and I accidentally click on the clip's triangle icon, the clip will start over from the beginning. This would be disasterous if the clip is a full song (not a loop). Is there a preference somewhere that will prevent this type of mistake?

3) I've noticed that each audio track has a horizontal bar that shows the time length of the clip, with a progress indicator that shows how much of the clip has played. What I really want, though, is to see a text (not graphical) display of how much time has passed and how much time is left until the end of the clip. This could be expressed either in minutes and seconds or in bars and beats.

4) I've noticed that there are master "play", "stop" and "record" buttons at the top of the screen. I've also noticed that each audio track has a button that determines if the track is active (playing to Master Out) or not. What I'd like is a stop button that just affects the clips on one audio track.

5) For each audio track, I have a vertical slider on the MIDI controller that controls the track's volume. In the default configuration, the very bottom of the slider maps to negative infinity db, and the top of the slider maps to +6 db. The problem: If I have the slider set so that the volume is 0 db, and then I move the slider halfway down, the volume drops by way more than 50%, which feels awfully unintuitive. My current solution is to have the bottom of the slider map to -30 db instead of negative infinity db. This mostly solves the problem, but it seems a bit sketchy (since I can't completely mute the track by sliding the slider all the way down). Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks for any advice on these topics. I really appreciate it.

it sounds like the audio engine is having a hard time keeping up - it's not latency, but sounds more like there's a tempo slip and the track is slowing down...I never had this problem with 6 and am curious if it is some dithering algorithm or what? I haven't even pushed the processor power over 25% since I upgraded (have a MacBook with Intel DuoCore and 2GB of RAM so I shouldn't have any problems there)...

is anyone else noticing this or am I just on crack?

it's doing this when working on original trax as well as when DJing trax. I'll be damned if I can figure out what the hell is causing it...

I'm having problems doing clips in odd meters like 7, 11, 15 etc...

I'm using Live 6.0.10 on an Apple Powerbook 1.5 GHz Power PC G4 2GB DDR SRAM using OSX 10.4.11. The audio interface is a MOTU 828.

In Session view, I'll set the signature denominator to 7/8 (or 7/4 sometimes). Then I'll pick a drum instrument in Impulse to use for creating drum clips. I start to record a clip with the metronome on ( I use an Akai percussion pad controller). At first, it sounds correct with the downbeat metronome click in the right place (on "1"). But as I record or play back the clip, the metronome downbeat click sound moves to another beat. It stays at the same tempo but the downbeat changes as if it doesn't want to stay in 7/8 or 7/4. Can you figure out why it's doing this? A lot of what I'm working on is in odd meters.

Thanks!

AAS is selling all their physical modeling stuff in a package deal which i am more inclined to buy than the Suite.

I've boosted the master volume to 6dB, rendered and then re-rendered the track with an additional 6dB, without normalizing the rendering (the only way to boost the volume in rendering?)... I've had to do this three times, adding 18dB to my track, in order for it to be of comparable volume to the other tracks in my collection!
On October 25, 2007, Ableton's West Coast Product Specialist Laura Escudé will host special guests Irwin, Jim Cowgill and Drew Anderson.

Irwin has been at the frontier of live electronic music since 1996, and headlined over three hundred shows in the U.S. and Europe. All beats are performed live with electronic drums and samples, other sounds are designed and generated directly from computer, accessed via theremin and looped on the spot. "Irwin is considered by many the most innovative and talented live electronic act in the world." -KPBS

Jim Cowgill has been active in electronic music since 1982. From early work with synth- pop bands like Glad Corp, he eventually became a solo performer occasionally collaborating with other musicians. He has composed music for corporate videos, and theatrical sound design. His current music project is Sequenox; a journey into cinematic ambient and synthesized rhythms. Jim has used Ableton Live since version 4; and relies on it as a creative tool, both in performance and in the studio.

Since hearing Led Zeppelin played back on an Apple IIe computer in 1985, Drew Anderson has been hooked on sound and computers. Professionally, he has worn many hats including writer for Computer Music and mastering engineer for Masterdisk in NYC. Musically, he has collaborated with musicians and artists from around the world for a number of multimedia and musical projects. Currently he is composing for the installation "The God Project" with artist Keri Bruno and writing for his project "lake of sleep'. Drew has been an active Abelton user (and obsessive) since the demo of Live 1.0.

Hi all,

New to the group. I produce my own tracks using Live and a ton of filters and plugins (NI mostly). I release the tracks as well as play them live blended as a set. I first tried playing all the als tracks in one session but on most laptops, even my Duo Core 2 Ghz with 1.5 GB RAM etc, the CPU and disk fail after 2-3 minutes. I then tried freezing tracks, but this also created small glitches when the disk or CPU maxed, so I settled with Rendering the tracks as 24 bit 48000 sample wavs, and creating an arrangement with the wavs, blended with all the DJ moves (equilization, volume, filters, all automated), the set is an hour long and so far it has stood true on this laptop through several live gigs without a glitch.

Yes - I miss having all my clips to manipulate, but at the end of the day, performing live you CANNOT have issues, so this seems the safest way.

Any comments?

I tried rendering as 24 bit 196000 sample, but cant tell the difference.

Hey guys,

I started playing around with dj'ing using ableton and I'm stuck on something. Let me explain to you how my setup works. I have 3 tracks, a, b, c and the "audio to" are all set to sends only. One of my sends is routed to an external mini KP(kaoss pad) and then fed back into the system into an audio track and then out to the master.

The problem I'm having is that if I send my internal returns to master there is a time delay between the internal returns and wha'ts coming back from the mini kp. I've tried adjusting the track delay for the incoming external return and also the send which is sending the audio to the mini kp but I can't get them to sync.

The only way I've managed to deal with this is to send the internal returns to the mini kp's return as well but the problem with that is I'm affecting all audio beeing routed and cannot use the mini kp to only affect one track that I'm playing.

Is there a better way to do this? Is there a way to sync all the channels?

Much thanks!

Since, every time I open Live, I am asked to unlock and it asks for my serial number. Fine, I dig out the disks and enter the serial number (I even try it case specific) and I get an invalid message. I can cancel but Live works only in demo. I really don't know what else to say. If I do the uninstall>reinstall thing, I fear I will still get the same invalid serial message. I'm about to poop fire. Please help if you can.

So back when I started using ableton I was tryin to figure out what type of midi controller I should start with.... My choices: The Oxygen 8, The Trigger Finger and the MPD16. Obcviously my first choice was about whether I wanted a keyboard, or a pad controller. I went with the keyboard, so the decision was easy. That was about a year ago, and I've gotten a lot out of the oxygen 8, but I'm ready for a pad controller... and I find myself lucky in that I want/am ready for one when I actually have some cash to buy one.... The question becomes which one do I buy.... Unfortunately, the choice has expanded.... My choices are now: The Trigger Finger, The MPD 16 (for $50 less), The MPD 24 (for $50 more), or the PadKontrol (Also $50 more than the trigger finger).... Now I can spend up to $200, but judging from what I've seen in terms of reviews until now, the only one I prolly won't buy is the MPD 16 because I've seen quite a few issues with it.... But I'm still open to seeing someone's opinion on this.... my criteria are pretty simple outside of the obvious that it be a pad controller.... portability is a big plus (I'm thinking that this will be the controller I play out with, plus I'd like something small enough to take in a carryon along with my laptop), sturdiness (it's not gonna break and I don't have to bolt it down), and feel (This makes me lean toward the Akai's).... Of course, I have a monthly budget for ish like this (about $150), but I have some extra this month b/c I got a nice bonus... I already ordered the 2 gig ram upgrade.... so now I'm tryin to figure out what my best next move is with the cash that I have, so if anyone thinks something like operator or sampler is a better idea than a new controller, I'd hear them out too.... although you'd have to make a pretty good argument.... I know that the best way to figure out what you want is to go test everything out, BUT to do that I'm lookin at about 3 hours of traveling to get to the nearest music store that actually carries everything I would be comparing, so I'm kinda dependent on the net reviews....

Hey all... I've been workin with live for about a year now to create a bunch of tracks, many of which I have posted about here, and I'm gettin pretty close to being confident enough to make a demo and actually try to get out to do some live PA stuff at some local clubs. In my vision of doing live PA with live I"m goin out with my computer, a midi controller or two set up to launch clips and scenes from the tracks I've created in session view and about 10-15 tracks I"ve created in ableton in one large track so I can trigger said clips and scenes to move the crowd... However, I'm starting to realize that I may be asking too much of my computer (1st Gen black Macbook), as I"ve started to try to create the mixtape and I'm running into massive cpu issues. I'm seeing huge spikes on the meter, which of course are leading to sound cut outs, and I know it's because I have too many tracks loaded up.... I've tried freezing and even flattening everything, but I still can't get the cpu usage to stay within normal limits... Is it possible that adding more ram will help this (I'm maxing out my computer at the end of the month because I know it wouldn't hurt.... but I'm wondering if I"m goin to be let down after I do it.)
Now I know that live is supposed to be great for live performance, but I'm not sure I understand how people are using it for that if cpu usage spikes when you have too many scenes or clips in a set using session view... If you are using live for live PA performances, how are you doing it? Do you use session view and the clips and scenes you created for your own tracks? If so how do you set it up so it doesn't cause the cpu spikes?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
